impact on who wins the white house. dana bash shows us it happened before. >> reporter: election year 1972. the raging unpopular war in vietnam consumed the bitter campaign battle between president nixon and george mcgovern. suddenly on october 26th, 12 days before the election, vietnam negotiator henry kissinger made a surprise declaration believed to cement nixon's front-runner status. >> we believe that peace is at hand. >> reporter: it was the first so-called october surprise. a late in the game campaign event with a significant impact on the election. >> in order to win re-election for nixon in 1972, he needed to end the vietnam war. and this was sort of the definetive statement. >> reporter: the most famous october surprise was in 1980. 52 u.s. hostages held in iran were not released before the election despite president carter's efforts. instead they were freed as soon as rsh was inaugurated setting off democratic suspicion never proven that reagan elm sears back chanld with iran in delaying freeing the hostages and denied the troubled carter campaign a huge pre-election boost.

a chipotle restaurant in denver with senator rob portman. portman is playing obama in the mock debates. dana bash is following the romney campaign. dan lothian is with the obama campaign. did i say dana you're following the romney campaign? let's start with you, dana bash, you're in washington. what do you got? >> i have been looking into and reporting on some of romney's debate preps. you're right, carol. you mentioned that romney was with gop senator rob portman. i got to tell you, it is surprising that romney wants to hang out with portman still since he has been playing president obama. by all accounts in the mock debates, portman has been very, very tough on romney, to prepare him for the real thing. portman is the go-to guy for republicans for debate prep. he's worked with republican candidates since 2000 and i spoke with senator portman in an exclusive interview about what he does to prepare to prepare romney. >> how they're likely to express themselves, what the body language is going to be like, try to imitate the person, but you try to give a fair presentation, you know to whoever

-ins for the so-called other guy. let's bring in our senior congressional correspondent dana bash. you've spent time with rob portman who's been playing president obama for mitt romney in the practice debate sessions. portman takes the job very seriously, doesn't he? >> he takes it very seriously. and by all accounts he's really good at it. that's why republican candidates for the past decade plus have been asking him to play the role of the democratic candidate in these mock debates. and, you know, he does -- what he does to prepare he told me isn't just read the books and read the policy papers and watch the video of the democratic candidate so he can embody them and understand their policy prescriptions, he also looks at what their body language is like. because a big part of what these mock debates are all about is not only preparing in this case mitt romney to make sure he has his lines right, but also to make sure that he knows what's coming at him from in this case president obama. so when it comes to what mitt romney says but also what he does and how he acts and reacts. and that is a v
